Life With Braces

Braces need to last your entire treatment so they can do their job. Here is how to keep them working, stay comfortable and know when to call us.

What to Eat, What to Skip

Avoid: chewy, crunchy, sticky and hard foods, and anything you bite straight into, like corn on the cob or whole apples.

Enjoy: soft dairy and meats, seafood, breads and grains, soft fruits and vegetables. Ice cream, milkshakes and cake are all still on the menu.

Treatment will not last forever, and it is worth it to have a smile and teeth you are proud of.

Comfort and quick fixes

Soreness, Irritation and Loose Wires

  • Sore teeth the first days: dissolve a teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of lukewarm water and gargle for several minutes. An over-the-counter pain reliever also helps.
  • Irritated lips or cheeks: ask us for orthodontic wax to cover the spot while your mouth toughens up.
  • Slightly loose teeth are normal: teeth must loosen to move, and they firm up in their new position.
  • Loose wire or band: call or text us right away at (650) 598-0888. Save any piece that comes off and bring it to your appointment. Wax or a cotton ball over a poking wire helps until we see you.

Existing patients can get same-day emergency appointments.
